Nerd Valentines V: The Force Awakens

I missed doing Valentines for 2015 and as of right now I’ve only gotten two (well… one and a half) done for 2016. BUT I didn’t want to get too busy and miss posting them before the actual day. So here are my attempts at Valentines for the year featuring two rival fandoms Star Wars and Star Trek.
bbgreat
The first is from the new Star Wars movie. BB-8 was adorable and its name provided a gr8 pun. I hand drew BB8, took a pic of it on my phone, and then colored over the line art in photoshop. Once again, drawing with a mouse is hard. Star Wars font came from DaFont

So this is what I’m calling half a Valentine… or I could say an anti-Valentine like my Bones one from before. No real love or adoration is expressed by the card but since it’s a variation of the “Roses are red, violets are blue…” poem I’m counting it as half a Valentine.
Found a picture of The Enterprise online, erased the background, made new background with one of the paint brushes in photoshop. Star Trek font also from DaFont

I don’t know if I’ll be making any more this year but we will see.

Animated Comic Book Cover

hawkeyecovergif

It’s been a long time since I made something for this site, but Sarah put forth the challenge on twitter so here we go.
For as much as I love the Marvel movies I have not read that many comic books (I know… shaaaaame. Though I just moved and my house is within walking distance of a comic book store so we shall see). However, I have read Matt Fraction’s Hawkeye and it is amazing. When I found the comic book gif challenge my first thought was this cover. It is simple but a beautiful peace of work.

It was pretty simple to make it into a gif, as well. In photoshop I took the cover and removed the arrow from the picture. Then I duplicated the arrow-less layer 6 times. Then on each layer I pasted the arrow moving across the page. And voila. My first gif to jump back into making things for this site.

Nerd Valentines IV: The Search for Valentines

Another year another batch of Valentines, still the same crappy photoshopping. 🙂 Only three this year… unless I find time to make some after work but that’d be past Valentine’s Day.
darthvader2014 Darth Vader/ Star Wars one. I think this one might be my favorite.
spock2014 Spock/Star Trek
hodor2014 Hodor/Game of Thrones. Or the Hodor one might be my favorite….

Oscars Four Icon Challenge

The night before the Oscars I got the idea to make four icon challenges for the movies nominated for Best Picture. Because I didn’t think of this until 10pm the night before the Oscars, and because I had to work most of the day of the Oscars I did not finish these until now.  There were 9 nominees and so what follows are my 9 attempts at four icon challenges. Zero Dark Thirty was the hardest one for me to figure out what to draw but some of them (Life of Pi) were really easy.
My sister was able to guess all of them so I guess they’re not completely horrible but in case my art is bad I’ll write what the icons are supposed to be under the pictures.
Here are the 9 Best Picture Nominees see if you can match them up: Django Unchained, Amour, Silver Linings Playbook, Life of Pi, Lincoln, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Zero Dark Thirty, Les Miserables,  and the eventual winner Argo.
oscar1
Stovepipe hat, the number 13, Confederate Flag & American flag, Capital Building

oscar2
Ballet shoes, Vest made out of a plastic trash bag, Football, Letter

oscar3
Vhs tape, Darkness, Binoculars, Helicopter

oscar4
Heart, Piano, Wheelchair, Pigeon

oscar5
Rain boots, Storm, Boat, Alligator

oscar6
Canada, 6 people, Film camera, Azadi Tower

oscar7
Tooth, Broken handcuffs, Gun, Cigarette holder

oscar8
Loaf of Bread, Broken handcuffs, French flag, Silver candlesticks

oscar9
Lifeboat, Tiger, Pi, Cross

I know I used broken handcuffs for two of them but they both seemed to work well. Good luck if you attempt to guess 🙂

Nerd Valentines III: Attack of the Valentines

Yet another Valentine’s Day has arrived and for the third year in a row I whipped some cards up, and yet again I did not improve my style (but I kinda like the “bad” look to them… they’re campy). This years batch includes Doctor Who, Star Trek and Star Wars. And so without any further ado… valentinelove First is Doctor Who. The blue box is basically a time traveling machine that the characters use so I feel like the phrase is pretty self explanatory. valentineinfatuate This needs a bit more explaining. These aliens, though they may look silly, are one of the Doctor’s biggest (if not THE biggest enemy). To put it very simply they roll around, say “EXTERMINATE” and try to zap things with their lasers. So instead of EXTERMINATE I had them say INFATUATE, which I know someone on the internet has done before but whatever.
valentineyoda This is another one I’m sure someone somewhere has done: a Valentine with Yoda speak.
valentineredshirt Now for the Star Trek ones. This is a redshirt. In the Star Trek universe redshirts are known to die, so much so that any expendable type character in other shows/movies are known as redshirts. The phrase on this one comes from a Ke$ha song and I feel like it was appropriate.
valentineornot And finally, my anti-Valentine. Something new this year. Doctor Leonard “Bones” McCoy is my favorite character in Star Trek: The Original Series and the new movies but I couldn’t figure out how to make a Bones-centric Valentine so I took his catch phrase “I’m a Doctor not a… (bricklayer, escalator, physicist)” and altered it to be an anti-Valentine.

Animated Magazine Cover

Well, this took a lot longer than I expected. I think it’s pretty ok even with the hair bouncing around a bit but that’s because I got lazy. Whoops. My least favorite part of this was my attempt to recreate the clouds in the background. Basically I took the Doctor Who Entertainment Weekly Cover and cut out the still of the Doctor. I had to recreate some of the font (only for it later to be covered up by the gif). Then I took a gif from an episode of Doctor Who and that was that. A little bit more description can be found in the read more section.

Nerd Valentines… the Sequel

Valentines day is upon us again and I decided to create nerd valentines for the second year in a row. What’s more is I’m posting this BEFORE Valentines day, instead of a day late like last year. This year’s crop includes more Star Trek, some Community and one from Doctor Who. (Let it be known I watch entirely too much television). There’s only five right now but there’s still a couple days so I might make some more.
The first one is from NBC’s Community. Nothing really fancy. One of Abed’s frequent lines is “Cool Cool Cool” so I just tweaked it a bit.
The second one is also from Community. It specifically references the episode “Remedial Chaos Theory” in which Abed tells another character that he is creating six different timelines by rolling a die to decide who goes and gets the pizza. This Valentine combines that with passing notes in elementary school.

The next one is Doctor Who themed, can’t get much nerdier than that. The Doctor is an alien called a Time Lord. As you can, hopefully, tell from the valentine he has two hearts so that’s explains the phrase on this one.

If there is something nerdier than Doctor Who I’m going to say Star Trek. This fourth one has Mongomery Scott on it. He’s an Engineer aboard the Starship Enterprise. As many people know one of his quotes is “I’m giving her all she’s got Captain!” And that was the basis for this Valentine.
The final one is Captain James Tiberius Kirk, again from Star Trek.  One of the settings on their guns phasers is stun. It’s super cheesy but that’s what I was aiming for.

Animated Movie Poster Attempt 1

Here’s my first attempt at an animated movie poster, as well as my first real post for DS106 pt 2! It doesn’t really look like the other animated posters but this was my take on them. It’s basically the “frame” of the real movie poster. I removed most of the original image, except the candles (which I tried to keep but you can kind of tell where it’s a bit smudged and all). I then made a gif (in photoshop) of the part of the first movie where they arrive at Hogwarts via the boats. Then I put the “frame” of the poster overtop the gif and voilà! My animated movie poster.
This was pretty fun and I will probably make another one and perhaps do a step by step process post of how I did it instead of my awkward attempt at explanation.  🙂
Now to spruce up my blog.

On This Day Assignment

When my roommate Steph came up with the “On This Day Assignment” I knew exactly what I wanted to do for it. And finally, 2 months later I quit procrastinating and did this.

I did a simple version, just took a screenshot of a Harry Potter movie duel between Harry and Voldemort and put my name (in google colors) on top of it.

Explanation: I was born on May 2 and according to JK Rowling the Battle for Hogwarts/day Voldemort was killed was on May 2, 1998.  I think it’s a rocking birthday. 🙂 And I know this duel in the picture isn’t from the last movie (as it has not come out yet) but I think it gets the point across.

Star Wars Warning Labels

I saw this assignment pop up the other day and thought it looked fun but had no idea what to do. Then, on what turned out to be an almost 6hr trip from Fredericksburg to Philly, I thought of something. I remembered reading a list of ridiculous warning labels like a chainsaw’s “Do not attempt to stop with hands” or coffee cups saying “Caution: Contents hot,” so I took the chainsaw one and altered it a bit to work for the lightsaber.

Here’s my first attempt at it. It’s hard to see on the smallish picture but I added yellow and white onto the hilt (?) of the lightsaber. Drawing, even little lines, is tough without a mouse.

After making these two I made one more from when Anakin and Obi Wan were fighting. I couldn’t find a picture that I liked of the fight so I had to take a screen shot. I got the signs from websites but photoshopped them into my screenshot.

The warnings I made didn’t really help the characters in the movie though since Anakin (with Obi Wan’s “help”) fell into the lava and Luke ended up losing his hand on a lightsaber. Yay irony 😀

Also, I need to do a post outlining what I’m doing for my final project. I shall get on that in a couple days.
