Nerd Valentines V: The Force Awakens

I missed doing Valentines for 2015 and as of right now I’ve only gotten two (well… one and a half) done for 2016. BUT I didn’t want to get too busy and miss posting them before the actual day. So here are my attempts at Valentines for the year featuring two rival fandoms Star Wars and Star Trek.
bbgreat
The first is from the new Star Wars movie. BB-8 was adorable and its name provided a gr8 pun. I hand drew BB8, took a pic of it on my phone, and then colored over the line art in photoshop. Once again, drawing with a mouse is hard. Star Wars font came from DaFont
startrekvalentine
So this is what I’m calling half a Valentine… or I could say an anti-Valentine like my Bones one from before. No real love or adoration is expressed by the card but since it’s a variation of the “Roses are red, violets are blue…” poem I’m counting it as half a Valentine.
Found a picture of The Enterprise online, erased the background, made new background with one of the paint brushes in photoshop. Star Trek font also from DaFont

I don’t know if I’ll be making any more this year but we will see.

Daily Create 1480: Cattle brand

brand1
Ok so drawing with a computer mouse is difficult, but this is my design for a cattle brand. It’s based off my twitter handle mega_mc.
The brand is the Greek letter Omega (since it has MEGA in it…) and then the letter M in the middle. If you turn Omega on its side it looks like a C so Mega_Mc. Not to mention that Omega kinda looks like a horseshoe.

Nerd Valentines IV: The Search for Valentines

Another year another batch of Valentines, still the same crappy photoshopping. 🙂 Only three this year… unless I find time to make some after work but that’d be past Valentine’s Day.
darthvader2014 Darth Vader/ Star Wars one. I think this one might be my favorite.
spock2014 Spock/Star Trek
hodor2014 Hodor/Game of Thrones. Or the Hodor one might be my favorite….

Oscars Four Icon Challenge

The night before the Oscars I got the idea to make four icon challenges for the movies nominated for Best Picture. Because I didn’t think of this until 10pm the night before the Oscars, and because I had to work most of the day of the Oscars I did not finish these until now.  There were 9 nominees and so what follows are my 9 attempts at four icon challenges. Zero Dark Thirty was the hardest one for me to figure out what to draw but some of them (Life of Pi) were really easy.
My sister was able to guess all of them so I guess they’re not completely horrible but in case my art is bad I’ll write what the icons are supposed to be under the pictures.
Here are the 9 Best Picture Nominees see if you can match them up: Django Unchained, Amour, Silver Linings Playbook, Life of Pi, Lincoln, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Zero Dark Thirty, Les Miserables,  and the eventual winner Argo.
oscar1
Stovepipe hat, the number 13, Confederate Flag & American flag, Capital Building

oscar2
Ballet shoes, Vest made out of a plastic trash bag, Football, Letter

oscar3
Vhs tape, Darkness, Binoculars, Helicopter

oscar4
Heart, Piano, Wheelchair, Pigeon

oscar5
Rain boots, Storm, Boat, Alligator

oscar6
Canada, 6 people, Film camera, Azadi Tower

oscar7
Tooth, Broken handcuffs, Gun, Cigarette holder

oscar8
Loaf of Bread, Broken handcuffs, French flag, Silver candlesticks

oscar9
Lifeboat, Tiger, Pi, Cross

I know I used broken handcuffs for two of them but they both seemed to work well. Good luck if you attempt to guess 🙂

Colorize It

I know the DS106 classes are out of the Visual/Design Assignments now but you know what? they’re my favorites and since I’m an open participant I’m just going to stick with them since there’s no grade for me. 🙂
I recently tried my hand at the Colorize It assignment. I’m surprised that more people have not done it. First I had to find a black and white photo to recolor, so I took to the internet. I spend entirely too much time on the internet and remembered a post I’d seen on Buzzfeed: 50 Unexplained Black and White Photos ( the person who made the article also has a tumblr which has even more ridiculous black and white photos). I chose this one colorizeit1aA navy sailor brushing a taxidermied fox head while a cat sniffs it. I found it hilarious. The other ones in the post looked a little harder to colorize/figure out what the colors might’ve been before, and since this was my first attempt I chose a relatively easier one.
It didn’t take too long and, in my opinion, didn’t turn out too terribly bad. colorizeit1 And while I was initially worried about his skin color perhaps being off, it turned out the orange of the fox and the cat were the big problems. Despite how much I tried reducing the hue/saturation/lightness of that particular color it just seems to stick out cartoonish-ly. It didn’t help that the cat was, I assume, a calico cat. But this was really fun, I will probably do a couple more.

I didn’t color the boat because it was the background and rather difficult to get the color to look right. Besides I’m sure the boat was grey anyway.

Nerd Valentines III: Attack of the Valentines

Yet another Valentine’s Day has arrived and for the third year in a row I whipped some cards up, and yet again I did not improve my style (but I kinda like the “bad” look to them… they’re campy). This years batch includes Doctor Who, Star Trek and Star Wars. And so without any further ado… valentinelove First is Doctor Who. The blue box is basically a time traveling machine that the characters use so I feel like the phrase is pretty self explanatory. valentineinfatuate This needs a bit more explaining. These aliens, though they may look silly, are one of the Doctor’s biggest (if not THE biggest enemy). To put it very simply they roll around, say “EXTERMINATE” and try to zap things with their lasers. So instead of EXTERMINATE I had them say INFATUATE, which I know someone on the internet has done before but whatever.
valentineyoda This is another one I’m sure someone somewhere has done: a Valentine with Yoda speak.
valentineredshirt Now for the Star Trek ones. This is a redshirt. In the Star Trek universe redshirts are known to die, so much so that any expendable type character in other shows/movies are known as redshirts. The phrase on this one comes from a Ke$ha song and I feel like it was appropriate.
valentineornot And finally, my anti-Valentine. Something new this year. Doctor Leonard “Bones” McCoy is my favorite character in Star Trek: The Original Series and the new movies but I couldn’t figure out how to make a Bones-centric Valentine so I took his catch phrase “I’m a Doctor not a… (bricklayer, escalator, physicist)” and altered it to be an anti-Valentine.

Animated Magazine Cover

Well, this took a lot longer than I expected. I think it’s pretty ok even with the hair bouncing around a bit but that’s because I got lazy. Whoops. My least favorite part of this was my attempt to recreate the clouds in the background. Basically I took the Doctor Who Entertainment Weekly Cover and cut out the still of the Doctor. I had to recreate some of the font (only for it later to be covered up by the gif). Then I took a gif from an episode of Doctor Who and that was that. A little bit more description can be found in the read more section.

Color Splash: Water Tower

I went to New York in the Spring. I took a ton of pictures but one of my favorites was this one of the water tower in Brooklyn. It stood out pretty well in the regular photo but I figured making a color splash version just helped the color pop even more.

Color Splash Gif

I felt like I needed to do one more assignment to get the number of stars needed for the week, even though I’m not doing this for a grade. I really wanted to try the movie summarized in gif ones but the movies on my computer right now didn’t really lend themselves to that assignment.
I really liked the color splash assignment but I was itching to make a gif for the Say it Like the Peanut Butter assignment. So I combined them, and here’s the result.

It’s the scene from A New Hope where Obi-Wan is about to face Darth Vader, I haven’t seen the movie in awhile but I remember it being a pretty pivotal scene considering the outcome of the battle.

I wish Obi-Wan didn’t lean to the side, and only the lightsaber was moving but it was hard enough trying to get just the lightsaber be the only thing in color. I also wish that Obi-wan had the red light saber because I feel like that would’ve stood out more in the black and white gif, but alas he was not on the Dark Side.

There is a tutorial I was working on for this but it ended up too long so it’s going to get its own post. It should be up before the day is over.

Traveling with the Doctor

This summer, while searching for jobs and spending a ton of time watching netflix, I discovered Doctor Who (which is why it’s being featured in many of my assignments this year in DS106 and not last year). This past  autumn I bought a crocheted version of the Eleventh Doctor, (I also bought the Tenth Doctor for a friend).
Seeing as the Doctor, in the show, goes on adventures in his time traveling police call box, I took him on mine.
